Mumbai after midnight: What I noticed when the city finally slowed down

Mumbai is always bustling with activities, be it on the busy streets, the crowded local trains, the vibrant neighbourhoods or the city’s unparalleled energy. However, the city’s more private side shows up after dusk. The streets quieten, and familiar areas come alive in different ways.

South Mumbai feels different when the crowds disappear

South Mumbai boasts of some of the most popular landmarks such as the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Colaba Causeway, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, museums and historic premises. However, while all these areas are full of activity and are really crowded during the day, I noticed many of them became noticeably quieter after midnight.

Mumbai’s Bandra keeps its energy even after midnight

Bandra is the liveliest neighbourhood in the Mumbai metropolis, which houses cafes, restaurants, shopping streets, and entertainment spots. Though the city slows down, certain areas of Bandra still have some activity going on and are a favourite choice for all travellers who like a more modern and social side of Mumbai.

However, being situated in the neighbourhood, I got a lot of benefits from accessing South Mumbai, BMC, airport and other western suburbs. Hotels vary in size from boutique properties to business hotels or serviced apartments, which include in-house eateries, fitness facilities, meeting rooms and parking.

Mumbai’s BKC becomes noticeably quieter after business hours

The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) is one of the most important commercial and financial districts in Mumbai. It has multinational companies, financial institutions, convention centres and corporate headquarters. The area seemed to be full of people in the day.

However, after midnight, the crowds had worn off from BKC, making it a good option for business travellers who want to be near their meetings but have a more restful stay.

Juhu becomes calmer after the Mumbai beach crowds leave

ISKCON Temple and Juhu Beach are the most famous and popular aspects of Juhu, India. The area is a tourist destination and a popular holiday spot, as well as a coastal area where people can enjoy a laid-back getaway.

The area looked dim at night, especially when I explored areas away from Juhu from its busier parts. It is attractive to travellers such as myself looking for a beachfront location close to the airport and the western suburbs.

Mumbai after midnight offers a different perspective

Mumbai’s character changes as the night progresses. You can soak up the quiet side of South Mumbai at its historic streets, experience relief from the busy energy of BKC, enjoy relaxation at Juhu Beach and a bohemian setting at some parts of Bandra.

So, it is essential to select a hotel in Mumbai based on your intended experience. For those seeking heritage and popular landmarks, South Mumbai has the right offer. Bandra is ideal for cafés, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, connectivity and business travel, whereas BKC will work well for those heading to cafés, restaurants, shopping, entertainment and connectivity. For those who wish for a relaxed ambience and coastal living, Juhu is ideal.

Also, when festivals or major events take place and also if travelling during high-demand periods, then it is advisable to book hotels in Mumbai in advance, as they may get filled.

The bottom line

Mumbai is not a land that sleeps after midnight! I’ve found that the quieter streets, less traffic and calmer neighbourhoods provide me with a different method of exploring the city.

You can make your stay more comfortable if you select the appropriate neighbourhood for your business trip, sightseeing, shopping or holiday with your family. Whether it’s the hustle and bustle of South Mumbai, the calmness of BKC, the buzz of Bandra, or the relaxed surroundings of Juhu, Mumbai has an ambience to suit any type of traveller.
